Children with special needs are catered for within normal classroom activities by adjusting work programs to suit their abilities and particular needs. Where there is a need for concentrated emphasis on skill development, children are withdrawn for short periods to work under more direct supervision. Pupils who need prolonged specialist assistance will, with the approval and co-operation of their parents, be made the subject of a Statement of Special Educational Needs.
Children are introduced gradually to homework tasks as they progress through the school. These tasks will be relevant to the work being covered in the class. Homework will also be required of children to compensate for time lost due to holidays or illness or to complete work, which should have been completed within the allotted time in school.
Regular homework not only establishes good study habits essential to later stages in the education system but also allows parents to see their children’s work on a regular basis.
When your child/children bring their work home please feel free to make comments on their books if you feel they require additional support or may have taken an too long to complete a task. Communication between us this way can ensure effective monitoring of homework set. We greatly appreciate the valuable assistance given by committed parents in the classroom. Very few outside visits are possible without additional parent supervisors and most school events would be much more difficult to manage without parent help. Volunteers would be very welcome and should contact the relevant class teacher or any member of staff.
Whilst general care for the children is the responsibility of all staff, each child is placed in the specific care of one particular class teacher.
All the pupils take part in Circle Time; this activity allows the development of self-esteem, teamwork social responsibility and positive behaviour.
Our philosophy is that good discipline is established through organised good manners and consideration for others. The pupils have been involved in choosing their own Golden Rules and these are prominently displayed in each classroom. Good behaviour is expected of all our children within the school environment and it is hoped that, with the help of parents, this standard is upheld in the wider community.
The school uses a system of positive rewards to focus attention on good behaviour and work. Merits are awarded for positive attitudes to work, best work and caring and polite behaviour.
Where a punishment is thought necessary, this takes the form of a reprimand or withdrawal of privileges. Depending on the circumstances parents would be informed and expected to be involved in any follow-up.
