Welsh
Welsh is taught as a second language for one hour each week. We encourage the culture and appreciation of Wales throughout other subjects. A traditional Eisteddfod is held each year and the whole school is encouraged to participate. Residential visits to Glan Llyn and Cardiff are also arranged for the upper juniors.
Art and Design
In Art, the children are given the opportunity to explore a variety of mediums such as drawing, painting, clay, etc. and use many techniques and tools that will enable them to develop their imagination and creativity. Some of the work covered is linked to topics being covered in history or geography for example. They are also taught about the work of important and influential artists and learn to recognise the significant features of their work.
The children are able to experience the whole process involved in designing and making a product for a specific purpose. They are taught a number of practical skills, including how to use tools safely. The final part of this process is evaluation, when children look at their products objectively and make decisions about how they march their purpose and how they might be improved.
History and Geography
The children cover a variety of topics in history, learning about the past through research, oral history and many practical experiences. Visits to National Trust properties for example bring the subject to life e.g. Experiencing a day in the life of a servant at Erddig, visiting Chirk castle to study Stuart history and WW2.
Geography studies are structured to develop both skills and knowledge of the locality and the world. Children are encouraged to research and ask questions and cover a wide variety of topics. Theme weeks focusing on India and Africa are an enjoyable way of learning to understand different cultures, climate and the physical features of an area. Wherever possible the children are taken out to observe and practically understand their environment.
Music
There is a carefully structured program with an emphasis on participation. All children are encouraged to take part in concerts, presentation assemblies and plays. Those children particularly interested in music are encouraged to develop their skills by learning another instrument, joining the school choir or orchestra. The school offers lessons for woodwind, brass and strings (there is a small charge and parents are required to provide music books and instruments).
Physical Education
We see sport as an important aspect of school life. The children participate in a wide variety of sports including gymnastics, athletics, dance and swimming. Competition is encouraged for a variety of sporting activities for the juniors and several extra-curricular sports clubs are run after school.
