| Junior Department |
The junior classes Year 3 - 6 are divided between three classes. Where it is necessary to have a split age group the division is based upon careful assessment of each pupil and results in the end of year tests based on National Curriculum targets. |
In all the junior classes the emphasis is to tailor teaching to the pupil’s individual learning style. Many lessons are taught by specialist teachers allowing the pupils to benefit from a wide range of expertise. |

English is taught daily and covers speaking, listening, reading and writing. Pupils are taught to express themselves properly and appropriately, to read a variety of texts with understanding and to write accurately in all subjects. Additional activities occur throughout the year such as visits from authors and poets and drama workshops. |

A structured scheme is used which develops mental strategies and encourages practical problem solving. Various activities are undertaken to promote Maths including Maths Week and participation in a National Maths Challenge. |

Science is taught through two main approaches. The first is through investigation and testing out theories and hypotheses; the second is through learning and thinking scientifically about life processes and living things, materials and their properties, electricity, forces and motion, light and sound. |
Health and sex education form part of the science curriculum. We encourage the children to consider how lifestyle can affect health eg. healthy eating, hygiene, dental care, exercise, smoking, safety etc. Talks on ‘Growing Up' are arranged for Years 5 and 6 (for boys and girls separately) with the school nurse. Parents are notified in advance of these and invited to meet with the school nurse to discuss the structure of the talks. Parents may withdraw their children from these sessions if they wish. |
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) |
ICT is integrated into all curriculum areas. Each class is equipped with computers and the children are encouraged to develop their skills using a carefully structured programe of activities. The computers are connected to the Internet, which is 'Filtered' for safety. Children, however, will not be able to use the Internet unsupervised. (Click here for School Internet User Agreement) |

The children are taught about a number of world religions, including Christianity, and are encouraged to develop tolerance and understanding of the varying beliefs and customs that prevail in our multi-cultural society. Parents may withdraw their children from RE on religious grounds by writing to the Head teacher.
Assemblies are varied ranging from whole school assemblies taken by the staff, pupils or outside speakers to smaller group assemblies, which give the children opportunity to discuss events/ideas with their peers. |
Personal and Social Education (P.S.E.) |
This is delivered across the curriculum and is often linked to other subjects. P.S.E. issues are frequently the basis of our Assemblies. |
