What did you do in school today? |
8.55 a.m. |
At the start of the school day the infant children are brought into school by the Year
6 monitors who are responsible for their class. We encourage the children to be independent and take responsibility for taking off their coats and placing them on their peg in the cloakroom.
|
8.55 9.10 a.m. |
A Helpwr Heddiw (Helper of the Day) greets the children in Welsh while taking the register alongside the teacher. |
9.10 9.30 a.m. |
Maths and Language activities take up the morning. In Maths this involves a mental warm up which may typically include using a number stick to count in jumps of ones, tens and hundreds, depending of the level of development, using number fans for number recognition or place value and wipe on/wipe off whiteboards for mental maths. |
9.30 10.30 a.m. |
The focus of the lesson may be introduced and reinforced using practical activities, games and investigations, leading to independent recording in workbooks or exercise books. We use the recently published Abacus Evolve Maths Scheme to develop mathematical skills and understanding. Big books, videos and ICT software are all used to aid learning. |
10.00 10.30 a.m. |
School assembly is held on Monday and Wednesday. Infant Assembly is held on Friday afternoon (2.30 2.55 p.m.). |
10.30 10.45 a.m. |
Morning break snacks (biscuits/fruit) and drinks (milk/water) are provided. |
10.45 12.00 p.m. |
Lessons may begin with phonic work concentrating on the spelling words of the week, children will use the show me boards to practice the patterns being learned.
English activities encourage confident speakers and good listeners. A positive attitude to books and reading is very important and each classroom has a reading area with a variety of stimulating books to invite reading. We use the Oxford Reading Tree Reading Scheme to develop reading skills. Handwriting is practiced; emphasis is placed on correct letter formation leading to joining letters in Year 2. Children are taught the skills needed to become independent writers, typical activities would include writing poems, lists, instructions, stories, diary, recounts and reports. We use outside agencies as much as possible to inspire the childrens creativity. Recently this has included the poet Francesca Kay writing poetry with the infant children and the author Tony Mitton storytelling and talking to Year 2 about writing stories, poems and raps. |
12.00 1.00 p.m. |
Lunch play equipment e.g. skipping ropes; balls are available for use during the lunch break. |
An afternoon in the Year 2 class. |
The afternoon involves topic work, which includes science, history, geography, art, Religious Education, design and technology, Welsh, music and PE. The topics that we cover include:

As much as possible we use visits and workshops to provide a meaningful context for the children to learn. Recently this has included visits to a Welsh Jamborri, Techniquest, Erddig Hall, Theatr Clwyd Cymru, a block of 6 visits to the Forestry Commission run Forest School based at Alyn Waters Country Park and an arts/design workshop run by Honey Pots. |
Home learning tasks in reading, spelling and number are set weekly and parents are encouraged to take part in the home learning activities. |
